Options for treating acne during pregnancy

Whether you had acne before you became pregnant or are experiencing acne because you are pregnant, the last thing you need is a pimply face during such a joyous time in your life! But can you get acne treatment during pregnancy without harming your baby?

First, know that skin changes are a common thing during pregnancy, and you are not alone in having acne during pregnancy. Hormonal changes can trigger acne, and many women find that acne during pregnancy is worst in the second trimester. For some, acne almost seems like a symptom of pregnancy.

Most cases of pregnancy acne are brought about by hormonal fluctuations. For many women, the acne disappears after delivery (though some report that it continues until breast-feeding ceases.)

Acne treatment during pregnancy can be as simple as taking extra care in cleansing the skin. Use a gentle product such as Cetaphil, which is widely available in drug and discount stores, as the skin can often be more sensitive during pregnancy. All of the other skin care products you use, such as moisturizers and sunscreens, should also be mild and fragrance-free. Avoid astringent products such as toners, as they may simply irritate your skin.

If you find acne during pregnancy is such that you need to seek treatment, your choices are somewhat limited. Do not simply choose an over-the-counter product; talk to your prenatal care provider before trying anything. You may be able to use products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, but your doctor may want to advise you as to how much and how often.

Your doctor may also decide to prescribe erythromycin for acne during pregnancy, or a sulfur-based prescription skin cream. Many of the other acne treatments available are not advised for pregnant or nursing women, such as Accutane, Retin-A, or tetracycline and its other antibiotic relatives, as they can be harmful to a growing fetus. Furthermore, while you are nursing these remedies may still be off the table if you still have problems with acne after delivering your baby.

Lastly, the above advice should not be considered comprehensive. Ask your doctor before starting any acne treatment during pregnancy.
